THE GOOD LIFE belongs to the powerless

Matthew 5:3

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

For many people, "poor in spirit" sounds like a description of humility or spiritual weakness.

But Jesus' first listeners would have heard something much more radical.

He was speaking to ordinary people—farmers, labourers, fishermen, the sick and the socially overlooked. People with little influence over their own circumstances.

Jesus announces that the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

The blessing isn't found in poverty or powerlessness itself. The blessing is that God's kingdom comes near to those whom society often leaves behind.

In God's kingdom, worth isn't determined by status, wealth or influence. The empty-handed are welcomed first because they know their need.

This Beatitude reminds us that God's kingdom is received, not achieved.
