The Good Life Belongs to Those Who Hunger

Matthew 5:6

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”

What are you hungry for?

Hunger and thirst are difficult to ignore. They create an awareness that something essential is missing and move us to search for what we need. Jesus uses this language to describe people who are deeply dissatisfied with injustice, exploitation and broken relationships.

Biblical righteousness is about more than personal morality or appearing spiritually respectable. It means living in right relationship with God and doing right by other people. It is expressed when we treat others according to their God-given dignity, fulfil our responsibilities faithfully and help create communities in which everyone can flourish.

Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness cannot simply observe what is wrong and remain indifferent. They notice where people are mistreated, where power is abused and where relationships have been damaged. Their longing leads them towards action: defending the vulnerable, pursuing reconciliation, challenging exploitation and examining the ways they may benefit from another person’s disadvantage.

Jesus promises that this hunger will be satisfied. We may experience glimpses of that fulfilment now through forgiveness, justice and restored relationships, but the ultimate promise points towards God’s fully renewed world—a kingdom where righteousness is no longer absent.

Until then, kingdom people continue to hunger, act, pray and hope.
