The Nature of the Beast | Matthew Herel

In Luke 10, we meet Martha and Mary—two sisters, two temperaments, two approaches to Jesus. Martha is busy serving; Mary is sitting at Jesus' feet. Fast forward to John 12, and we see Mary again—this time, breaking open a costly perfume, anointing Jesus with worship that fills the whole house. Martha is there too, still serving—but the mood is different. There’s growth, not a personality transplant.

This message explores “the nature of the beast”—the parts of us that seem hardwired: our personalities, instincts, habits. Jesus doesn’t demand we become someone else. Instead, He invites us to be fully ourselves in His presence, but to orient our choices toward what truly matters.

Martha wasn’t wrong for serving; Mary wasn’t better because she sat. The difference lies in discernment—understanding what’s better in each moment.
